Onddoka's Catnip

Safe and Secure Catnip for Your Cats

Catnip is a plant that is often used to help cats relieve stress and relax, as it has effects similar to silvervine but is less stimulating.

Here, we will introduce in detail the catnip used at Onddoka.

We entrust the production of our catnip to Nakamuraen, a company in Yame City, Fukuoka Prefecture, that produces high-quality teas and herbs, with a commitment to safe, domestically sourced ingredients. By handling everything from raw material production to processing, they are a manufacturer that consistently provides excellent products.

The leaves are dried using specialized machinery with controlled temperature and humidity according to the type of leaf and its intended use, ensuring a uniform finish. Furthermore, by applying low-temperature warm air, a greater amount of active ingredients are preserved, resulting in dried catnip that is highly fragrant and beautifully colored.

What kind of plant is catnip?

Catnip is a perennial herb native to Asia and Europe, characterized by its long, heart-shaped leaves. Its name comes from the fact that cats (cat) like to chew (nip) it. It has a refreshing mint-like scent and contains components*1 that give cats a euphoric feeling. Cultivated since ancient Roman times in Europe, it is a highly safe plant that has been enjoyed in herbal teas and potpourri.

The Difference Between Catnip and Silvervine

Silvervine is a deciduous climbing plant that grows wild in mountainous areas and hills throughout Japan. Among its fruits, those that have formed galls due to insect oviposition are called "insect galls," and cats are attracted to the components*2 abundantly contained in these fruits.

It is said that when inhaled, it acts on the central nervous system of the brain, releasing so-called happiness hormones*3. This euphoria can relax cats, and when hidden in a toy, it encourages play and helps relieve stress. Many people also sprinkle powdered silvervine on food or treats when their cats have no appetite.

On the other hand, catnip is used in the same way, but it works more gently. It is a welcome option for cats that become excessively excited with silvervine, as it can be given with peace of mind.

How to Use Catnip and Precautions

If you are giving it directly from the bag, please give it in small amounts. Although it has a gentle effect, giving too much at once can upset your cat's stomach.

If you want your cat to enjoy the scent, rub the bag against a toy to transfer the scent, or put it inside a toy. Ondokka also sells a toy called "Cat Kicker" that contains catnip. You can easily try catnip with it, so please check out the product page. (Some cats may not show a euphoric reaction when given catnip.)

Please note that it should not be given to cats with epilepsy. The AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association) advises caution because research results indicate that it can induce seizures in rats. Also, it has uterine stimulant effects that can promote menstruation, so do not give it to pregnant cats.

Recommended for these cats

It is recommended for cats that get too excited with silvervine, cats that become aggressive towards other cats in multi-cat households, sensitive cats easily stressed, or cats that are nervous because they have just arrived home... You'll see your cats rolling around on the floor, purring contentedly, looking happy.
